About Sona Trekking

My name is Keo Sona. I am 44 years old and come from Lumphat close to Banlung in Ratanakiri district. I belong to the Indigenous Tribe of the Tumpoon or Kroung people and in addition to speaking the tribal language I speak English, Lao and some French.
I have been working as a tour guide for 8 years, organizing and managing tours around Ratanakiri, and guiding tourists in the jungle treks from 1 to 7 days in length.

What I can offer

I can offer you tours to learn about my culture and traditions. You can join traditional ceremonies and wedding parties. I can teach you about medicinal jungle plants and the dangers from animals in the forest. I know all the types of bamboo and techniques of working with it from making baskets to building houses.

As well as jungle trekking and river excursions I can offer you the best and most complete tribal village experiences and homestays as well as nightly fires and activities as you require.

Special and really personal experience!

We met Sona when we got food in his reggae-bar, the only reggae bar in town 😉 and had a lovely talk with him while we ate great food, cooked by his sweet wife. Awesome!

We’ve spent 3 days trekking in the jungle, which was an awesome experience!
Hiking through the jungle, cooking on fire fish we caught, sleeping in hammocks, swimming under waterfalls.
Both the guide and the ranger are experienced and provide you with plenty of facts about the jungle.
Also, we ate red ants for breakfast.

Seeing distant indigenous villages

I am fascinated with indigenous cultures and Sona arranged a day trip to visit numerous distant tribal villages. Sona knows all about the many indigenous people who live in Ratanakiri and explained how each has different beliefs, languages, and styles. He was able to allow us to sit and talk with miners, older women in the village and even children and we could ask many questions.
If you want a unique tour where you can learn all about indigenous people of Ratanakiri and visit their villages then go with Sona. He is nothing short of amazing for a tour guide.

Wow, just wow

Sona is probably the best guide you can find in Banlung. So open hearted and minded, knows everything about Cambodia and the best tracks. Doesn’t matter if you only go one day, or take more time. He also told me, he adapts his tracks to his groups individually… so if you want to visit certain places (like I did), he will set up a tour especially for you, taking your age, physical possibilities and the local conditions into account. So, I will also try it again with my kids.
It’s definitely worth it!

Excellent customized tours!

Very personable. Excellent English. Great tour guide, knows the area really well. Very client-centered. He took care of us. We’d highly recommend him. Went out of his way to personalize a tour down the river by Lumphat and to visit his parents home there. We used him regularly for tours and rides over 5 days.
At his small restaurant his wife makes the best banana pancakes that we’ve had in Cambodia!

Homestay and Trekking experience

We arrived at Sona’s home, he was warm and welcoming. On the same day he arranged our trip to the crater lake and took us there in his tuk tuk. Next he helped us organize our plans to visit the jungle. He helped us choose the best tour and was able to provide lots of information about the local minority ethnic groups and the spectacular nature. Overall an amazing experience and a must if you are looking for authenticity, an understanding of local culture and a connection with nature this is will be the highlight of your time in Cambodia!
