Yeak Laom: emerald-hued volcanic crater lake

You simply can’t leave Banlung without visiting this emblematic place of the region! This sublime lake, in the shape of almost a perfect circle, is considered sacred by different tribes in the region. The surrounding lush vegetation forms a real nature reserve, teeming with exotic birds, and the fauna and flora it shelters are today protected.

The stunning emerald-hued Boeng Yeak Laom, measures about 800 meters in diameter and reaches depths of 48 meters, contributing to its crystal-clear waters. While some believe the lake occupies a 4,000-year-old volcanic crater, others are convinced it’s much older, over 700,000 years old, thanks to a meteorite impact.

For the indigenous minorities, this lake is more than just a body of water; it’s a sacred place, home to mysterious creatures that swim in its depths. But, to the average swimmer, it’s just the perfect spot for a refreshing swim. On the northwestern side you’ll find an intriguing ethnic and cultural center, where you can learn about ethnic minorities through a small exhibit. It’s got displays on tribal folklore and superstitions, along with some handicrafts.

Boeng Yeak Laom has picturesque nature trails perfect for hiking. The further you go from the entrance the more peaceful it gets. You will see a wide range of flora and fauna as you journey through the lush greenery. The biodiversity of this area is truly awe-inspiring, from towering trees to colorful birds.

Lomkod Lake is a hidden gem that offers a serene and picturesque escape from the bustling urban life. Far less touristy than Yeak Laom, it’s an ideal destination for nature lovers and those looking to experience the quiet, less-explored side of Cambodia.

You can do a little trek around the lake, if only to take in the nicer view from the other side. Its calm waters and tranquil atmosphere make it perfect for relaxing or enjoying picnics.

The lake is particularly stunning during the early morning hours, when mist hovers over the water, creating a mystical atmosphere. You can experience this when you book an overnight stay in a tribal village in the Lumphat region.
